How aircrafts are assinged altitude before entering the ocean?

suppose one flight is flying from newyork to london ,another flight is flying from london to newyork if there respective airtraffic controllers assign same altitude then there is a chance for collision how this is avoided .as there is no ciontact between the air traffic controllers
