Travel with my cat on a carrier?

me and my family will be traveling alot this summer,(to beaches) and were taking my cat for fun.I need some tips on taking my cat with me.How can i take him without being scared? im taking him in a carrier,im not taking in a cat stroller because i wont be able to get on the escalotor and all.And the beach im going to is atlantic city. which is about 1 and a half hour from home.what do i do if he needs to go to the bathroom? How can i train him to like the carrier? Please give me every tips on traveling with him.we will be going alot over the summer.( and if i have to bring the litter box how can i bring it without making it tip over?)
